Hours for emergency services to attend to call

Man carried from parking lot.

Shoppers, street vendors and other residents were shocked when a collapsed man lay on the pavement for three hours before Emergency Management Services (EMS) attended to him.

According to one of the street vendors doing business in front of the Spar in Generaal Pienaar Avenue, the man, who is believed to be in his 40’s, sat down next to him complaining that he was tired after walking all the way from Krugersdorp. After chatting about soccer for a while he went into the shop to buy food and a cold drink. As he walked into the parking lot he collapsed. Two concerned bystanders carried him to the island in the middle of the street where it was cooler underneath a tree. They phoned for an ambulance at 1pm but it only arrived just after 4pm. Two Metro Police members looked after the man while they waited for the ambulance.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi could not be reached for comment. It is uncertain to which hospital the man was taken and what his condition is.
