Wilro Park Lions welcomes new member

New members and new challenges for the Wilro Lions Club, who have made Autism Awareness their next big project.

The Lions Club of Wilro Park are excited to welcome new challenges and a new member.

Lion Sandy van Heerden said, “We are very happy to have Ross [Miller] join us as we always encourage younger people to become involved with serving those less fortunate than ourselves.”

Their projects include renovating and decorating a house at Gateway Village and ‘adopting’ the needs of the residents, caring for senior citizens at local retirement homes, sponsoring an educational bursary for a local student, providing food parcels to the less fortunate, caring for children at a local day care centre, Comfort Kits for Kids, Baby Love Hampers and the Lions’ Roodepoort Eye Clinic.

This September brings a new set of challenges for the club as they have chosen Autism Awareness as a new project to focus on.

“We will be promoting awareness, providing sensory kits and assisting the children and families affected by it as much as we can,” Van Heerden told the Record.

The club hosted their annual Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge on Sunday 6 September at the Tarlton International Raceway. On 10 October they will host their Cancer Awareness Afternoon, taking place in conjunction with World Service Day.

The charity-driven club, which was chartered on 5 April 1986, meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Lions Community Centre at 16 Belladonna Street, Roodekrans. It forms part of the largest community service organisation in the world, Lions Club International, with the simplistic motto, “We serve”.
