From paper to art

He started working with recycled material in 2004

He scavenges from dumpsite to dumpsite, looking for recycle material. With Siphokazi Makhwenkwana, Nonqaba and Lunga Afrika helping him realize his dream, Mzwakhe Hadi has been creating works of art.

From paper work to leather touch, Hadi has been using typing paper, newspapers, dry grass and leaves to make paper.

Other products he makes from the materials is paper bags, albums, frames and beads.

“This method has been used since ancient times and we are bringing it back. Using recycled material to make these products is fantastic,” said Hadi.

He started working with recycled material in 2004, honing his skills to build a better local economy by showing there are ways of sustaining oneself.

“I knew how to cut and design since school but my first real art experience came through a ceramics workshop I attended. At the time, I did not see it as something I could further develop because the machines used are expensive,” he said.

Makhwenkwana, Nonqaba and Lunga have been helping Hadi by looking for materials. They have also been learning to design and make products from Hadi.

A want to spread his love of creating products from recycled material, Hadi moved from Braamfischerville to Matholesville where he saw the opportunity to impart his skills to the community.

“I saw social projects were lacking in the area. I want to spread this kind of innovative sustainability by teaching the community how to use recycled material,” he said.

Hadi works with leather too, making jackets, bags, trousers, bracelets and rings with leather material he picks up from dump sites.

“We have to think in order to make a living and we can make the environment a better place through using recycled material,” he said.

Hadi also dreams of one day living in a house made of recycled material.

“There are glass houses so why is this idea not possible? I will work hard to make sure I realize my dream,” he said.
