CMR golf club celebrates Centenary

Golf club to celebrate centenary with a golf festival.

In October CMR Golf Course will be celebrating their centenary year.

In honour of such a milestone, the club will be hosting a festival of gold, where a Fourball alliance, Betterball and Individual tournaments will take place.

It was in 1894 that the Main Reef Mining Company bought the Paardekraal farm which was then sold to Consolidated Main Reef Mines and Estates.

It was later cut up into 332 stands forming Maraisburg.

JE Healey became Mine Manager and set about designing and constructing a nine-hole golf course.

The club itself was founded in 1914 and was opened for play in 1932. Between 1924 and 1937, the course was extended to 12 holes.

Club chairman Winston Smith said the celebrations will coincide with the launching of their new website which they have been working on.

“The celebrations will be open to the public because the golf course has a rich history and we want the community to join us. There will be a braai after each competition to give everyone a chance to socialize. We will also have special commemorative shirts available,” he said.

Smith, who has been chairman of the club for three years, has been a member of the club for 28 years.

He has served in the club’s committee at various capacities.

“I am here to see the legacy of the club continue untarnished. I have a passion for golf and I am working hard for the development of juniors especially in areas such as Bosmont, Fleurhof, Maraisburg and Florida,” he said.

The celebrations will start from 9 October to 11 October.
