Video: Callan Edwards’ ongoing legacy

"Callan was a vibrant teen with a giving spirit."

Songs and praises were sung for Callan Edwards on Saturday morning as local residents celebrated her life.

Her mother, Sandy Edwards, started the Callan Tyler Empowerment Centre which officially opened on Saturday, as a form of giving back to Callan.

The day started off with a march from the Noordgesig Boys Brigade as they livened up the Florida Streets with drums and trumpets. The unveiling of the centre took place soon afterwards.

A special service was also held for Callan where all attendants sung the National Anthem in unison.

Lucinda Gill, organiser of the event described Callan as a vibrant teen with a giving spirit.

“She loved sports and she had an angelic voice which is why the Empowerment Centre focuses on music, sports, counselling services and a feeding scheme,” said Lucinda.

Callan Edwards died on 3 July this year after her body rejected the donor liver two years ago.

DA Ward 70 Councillor Dave Dewes was one of the guest speakers at the event and while he made his speech the audience could be seen nodding with agreement to what was said.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me to be here as a councillor because I have seen this place deteriorate in the past and for 30 years, I wanted to change that,” Dave said in his speech.

He added he looks forward to the Empowerment Centre and sees great things in store for it in the future.

The centre is now officially open for sports tournaments. For bookings call the centre’s office on 011 028 5814, Fabion Kroots on 083 380 2386 or Andries Hermans on 071 938 8097.
