No matter what age you are, it is never too late to learn to read and write.

Here is why being literate is important and how you can introduce reading to your children from a young age:

• Register them at your local library and allow them to read books of different genres

• Show them how to use a Dictionary

• Encourage your child to read newspapers, novels, comics and magazines

• Talk to them about interesting topics you read

• Discuss your favourite authors or illustrators and explain why you like them

• Discuss new and unusual words or phrases with them

• Encourage them to play games that would develop their knowledge
