GALLERY: Mr SA gets in the saddle with Sarda

RUIMSIG – Mr South Africa adopts Sarda as an official charity.

When asked what he knew about the South Africa Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda), Mr South Africa 2014, Armand du Plessis was completely candid that he did not know much. “I thought it was a private riding school that gave lessons for anyone that was interested. I had no idea of the work that they do.”

Fundraiser Julia Morris explained that Sarda “provides therapeutic horse riding for physically and mentally challenged children at our centre in Peter Road, Ruimsig. This therapy benefits all the children that ride with us immensely, all of whom live with a variety of disabilities including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down’s syndrome, autism and foetal alcohol syndrome, among others. Currently, over 100 children ride with us weekly and for every child there are another three on the waiting list.”

In a meeting with Sarda on 4 September, Du Plessis was given a tour of the premises. As his visit coincided with a morning lesson, Morris was able to explain what the school does while allowing him to observe their work first hand.

Du Plessis has confirmed his intention to work with Sarda to raise awareness of the school and to attract more corporate involvement. Morris is pleased with his involvement and looks forward to a productive working relationship.
