Roodies runners impress

The Roodepoort Athletics Club are proud to have three female athletes representing them on the national stage.

Ansie Bronkhorst and Ronelle Heyns both returned with a silver and bronze medal respectively at the recent Cross Country Provincial Championships in Boksburg.

Meanwhile, the club’s team captain Monica Reis jetted off to France to participate at the Master Athletics Championships.

Ansie Bronkhorst from Florida, who competed in the 55-59-year-old age category has been running since the age of 34. She received her provincial and national colours in the same year and now at 56 years old, still enjoys the thrill of the race.

“I love challenges because road racing can be boring at times. Running is stress-free unlike cycling for example where you get a flat tyre,” she said.

53-year-old Heyns started running in 1978, representing Roodepoort and later the province.

“I can run anytime and anywhere I feel like. I wake up in the morning before everyone else and that makes me feel like I’ve beaten the world,” she said.

Reis started participating in cross country and track for South Africa and Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) after a friend challenged her to take part in the 2010 Comrades Marathon.

“Ever since then, I have qualified for CGA every year but I prefer short distances. I’m a very competitive person and I enjoy representing my club and country,” she said.

She qualified to go to France as she is registered with Master Athletics.

“The athletes I competed against are of a high level but the experience was amazing and nerve-wrecking,” she said.

The women will next compete at the SA cross country Championships in Middelburg in two weeks time.
