Department of Education keeping mum on allegations

Allegations against West Ridge High School not yet investigated.

The Department of Education has remained quiet on allegations against West Ridge High School despite being informed of controversies at the school.

The Record has been investigating allegations against the school over the past week after chaos erupted at the school on Friday 21 August.

Allegations include the whole matric group being suspended on Friday following havoc on school grounds, the school having no existing group of prefects and no discipline to the extent that bouncers were hired to keep children in line.

Other allegations reported to the Department of Education by the Record includes barricades being put up in the school, police being dispatched to the school on Friday, mismanagement including mismanagement of school funds, emotional bullying, violence and damage to property. It is also interesting to note principal Sydney Mashige still heads the school after corruption reports and being suspended without pay for two months in 2013. His office has refused to comment on allegations, referring all queries to the department.

The Record sent a detailed request for response to spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane and media liaison Thebe Khumalo on Monday 31 August after both failed to comment over the phone. Sekhonyane was not reachable even by cell phone.

Today the Record again tried to make contact without success, both again failing to answer phone calls.

The Department of Education has to date not acknowledged receipt of the query nor committed to investigate matters at the school.

The Record is following up on other leads. More to follow.
