Celebrating their Spring love

“Put your faith and trust in God’s hands and put each other and the family as the top priority. Everything else comes after,” they said.

A love story that began in a first aid class has blossomed for more than half a century as Fannie and Anna Lizamore celebrate their 60 anniversary today.

The couple, who are 82 and 80 years old respectively met in Krugersdorp in 1950 when a brave Fannie followed Anna home from class.

Although she was not happy with his daring act, they soon got to know each other. After five years, they tied the knot in 1955 on this very day.

The newly wed couple then moved to Florida.

They point to communication as one of the big reasons their marriage has lasted throughout the years.

“You have to look over each other’s mistakes and not nitpick over every little fault you find. Communicating with each other is very important and builds understanding. We have always lived a healthy and religious lifestyle, avoiding bad habits such as drinking and smoking,” said Anna.

Fanie was a director at Mac Steel while Anna was a housewife, taking care of their three daughters Annelize, Charmaine and Michelle.

“The lifestyle today is different, you could trust each other, even a stranger. A boy could follow you home and try to talk to you without fearing he may be after your life. Courtship was safer back then. In today’s society that is not possible,” said Anna.

The couple then moved to Port Shepstone 15 years ago, only to return to their roots and set up their home in Wilro Park.
