Is your mouth clean?

September is the month to practise oral hygeine

According to an online article gum disease is one of the most common health problems worldwide and it affects an about 90 per cent of South Africans at some point.

If you cannot remember the last time you visited your dentist for an oral check-up then take time this month to do so.

Because September is National Oral Month, the importance of oral hygiene visiting your dentist and ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy should be a priority.

“Bad breath and bleeding gums are the most common signs of an infected mouth, said Dirna Grobbelaar, oral hygiene advisor for an oral care company, in a press statement.

If you show signs of gum disease Grobbelaar recommends a visit to the dentist as soon as possible.

Here are tips to prevent gum disease:

• Brush your teeth regularly. Do this preferably in the morning and at night.

• Use mouthwash twice a day after brushing your teeth.

• Visit your dentist at least every six months.

• Drink lots of water. Not only is water healthy, it promotes saliva production to help rinse away harmful bacteria.
