GALLERY: You’re never too young to honour cancer heroes

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Little Bean Early Learning Centre raises awareness of cancer.

A class of five-year-olds may not be able to understand cancer fully, but they certainly understand confectionary. On 1 September Little Bean Learning Centre in Weltevreden Park took part in Cupcakes of Hope’s ‘Cupcake for Breakfast’ drive, which aims to honour those battling (or have lost the fight to) cancer.

Vimala Moodley of Cupcakes of Hope brought the cupcakes for the pupils, who also wore decorated hats in honour of Spring Day. Most of the children had the name of someone affected by cancer drawn on their palm, in support.

The children all enjoyed being able to eat cupcakes in the morning as well as having to write on their palms.

Principal and teacher Nicole Jansen van Rensburg said of the event, “As a school we like to give back to the community. Last year Vimala (Moodley) asked us to do something for cancer so we raised a bit of money for them and this year we decided to do something as well. This year we focused on awareness and getting the children involved. While the children don’t really understand the disease now, in the future the awareness drives will become more relevant for them.”
