Photos: Employees gambling with their lives

Shocking frequency of accidents at this spot.

Employees of Goldrush, a popular gambling establishment, say their lives and vehicles are in danger due to the frequent accidents right in front of their work place.

At Sunday at about 1pm there was once again an accident where a vehicle crashed into the boundary wall on Ontdekkers Road. According to Lucinda Koekemoer, who spoke on behalf of management, this was the third accident in one week. She estimates that at least one accident takes place every week.

“What made this last accident so scary is that not only do we park our vehicles where the car came through the wall but it is also a favourite spot to stand and smoke during our breaks,” said Koekemoer. “Someone could have died were it a weekday. It is serious and something needs to be done.”

Koekemoer explained what she believes the problem is.

“When vehicles come from Westgate up Ruhama Avenue towards Ontdekkers Road there is a slipway to the left with a yielding sign but they ignore it and instead use it as just a slipway. As soon as they are on Ontdekkers Road other traffic forces them off the road and into our wall or crash into each other. Except for the regular accidents this is also the second time a vehicle came through our wall,”says a concerned Koekemoer.
