Grade 9s will have to make one of their first major decisions this term and that is subject choices for the next phase of their schooling career, which will eventually help them to realise career opportunities.

As this may prove a daunting task, for both pupils and parents, it is important to get the right advice and information which would provide perspective in making this important choice. Some pupils may already have an inkling of what they intend to do once they have completed their Matric, and some have yet to make that decision.

It is crucial to note that career choice and subject choice is co-dependent. The subjects chosen at this juncture will influence career choices and vice-versa. But one cannot choose a career like one would choose an item on a menu – it is a decision that requires careful thought and consideration.

Lana Kleingeld, educational psychologist at Rand Park High School said, “The Grade 9 life orientation programme encourages self-knowledge – what they know about themselves, what they enjoy, where their interests lie. This would help determine the career field, which is broader and provides more options.”

With thousands of careers to choose from, one would need to research options. Technological advances as well as modern living have opened up further career opportunities. Some would require tertiary education and some may not. It is important to choose one that would appeal to one’s personality and goals for the future.

As parents are also very much involved in the process, it is advisable to allow their children to make the ultimate choice. Kleingeld suggested, “Let your children pursue their own dreams and if needs be, it is a good idea to compromise and come to an understanding.”

Here are some handy tips for Grade 9s to help them make their choice:

What are my strengths? Which subjects do I excel at? (It would be good idea to study your current results.)

What field would I like to study further? (Have you decided on a career path?)
