More clean-up efforts in Princess

Illegal dumping a persistant problem but skips not feasible in Princess, says Mann.

The informal settlement again underwent a clean-up operation last Friday (21 August) in an effort to educate and orden residents.

DA councillor for Ward 85 Carl Mann got representatives from Pikitup, the Department of Environmental Health, Region C’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum), JMPD and the Community Work Programme (CWP) together to help out in the settlement.

Meeting on Van De Linde Road the group swept through the settlement for the day. Litter was cleared and dirt roads were scraped clear in the combined effort of various departments while the JMPD maintained order.

Some residents approached Mann about getting involved with the CWP after the clean-up operation.

“This sort of operation should be a more regular occurrence in Princess,” Mann told the Record.

He said it was unfortunately not feasible to install Pikitup skips in the settlement and regular clean-up operations are imperative to keeping it clean.

“Installing skips would cause a whole bunch of new problems in the area; either it will be used for illegal dumping or fires will be made in it, it has also occurred in Johannesburg where human waste and even babies’ bodies were found in skips in informal settlements,” he said.

Illegal dumping is a persistent problem in the settlement.
