Hilarity secures Goodman’s first place

To be funny pays off in the Florida Toastmasters Club.

A Humourous and Impromptu Speech Contest was the perfect opportunity for Florida Toastmasters to fine-tune their delivery skills last week.

On Tuesday 18 August the passionate speakers got together at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre to deliver powerful yet funny speeches.

President Dawn Hemming extended a warm welcome to all members and four guests that attended the meeting. Distinguished Toastmaster Dick Hallett proposed the toast of the evening, likening contests to skimming a flat stone across water several times until mastering the art of several bounces.

Toastmaster Barry Nelson said a contest gets members out of their comfort zone and is considered a milestone by which members measure their growth within the Toastmasters programme.

Delivering impromptu speeches on the evening were Elize Ellis, Paul Nicolai and Lawrence Makeleni. All except the first left the room to ensure the subject, “What would you change if you were CEO of Eskom?”, remained unknown to the rest until they are expected to speak.

Those participating in the Humourous Speech Contest were Craig Ellis, Paul Nicolai and Clive Goodman. Contestants chose their own speech topics but were subjected to a time limit of maximum seven minutes.

Goodman’s speech titled “Piles of Emotional Intelligence” taught members there are no quick fixes for Haemorrhoids. Nicolai’s speech titled “The myth about Energy Saving Lamps” busted a few beliefs about the bulbs. Ellis’ speech titled “Trapped easy” covered his daunting experience over three days when he learned how to swing on a high trapesium.

Elize Ellis was declared the best impromptu speaker of the evening while Clive Goodman was declared best humourous speaker.

“His speech was hilarious and kept the listeners in stitches of laughter,” club spokesperson Paul Nicolai told the Record.

“We congratulate both Elize and Clive. Clive will now advance to competing with other club’s winners on Division level,” he said.

The club’s next meeting is on Tuesday 1 September at the Huguenot Restaurant, Flora Centre, Ontdekkers Road from 7.15pm. Dress code is smart casual.
