GALLERY and VIDEO: Guvon Academy students wow at food and wine pairing

HONEYDEW – Glenburn Lodge hosts first Guvon Academy student showcase.

For the first time ever the culinary and events management students for the Guvon Academy joined forces to showcase their abilities in a Food and Wine Show.

Glenburn Lodge, in Honeydew, where the academy is situated, hosted the event on 22 August. The students were able to prepare everything on the spot in their training kitchen while the events management students displayed their decorating skills in the lecture room next door.

The guest list was kept relatively small according to Brenda Dooge, client and media relations manager for the Guvon Group, as it was their first showcase and they didn’t want to overwhelm the students. The day featured about 12 culinary students and five events management students.

Lynette Webb, senior lecturer and skills developer explained that she and the executive chef, Dion van Wielligh, worked closely with the students to organise the event. Webb explained, “We wanted the students to do something different where they can showcase their knowledge and skills learned over the last year.” Webb added, “The events management students had to work with the culinary students regarding the menu of food going on display and how they will need to set up the event accordingly.” Webb further explained that the course work is divided up as 60 per cent practical work and 40 per cent theory, and aims to equip students properly for entering the hospitality industry.

Academy director Adrie van der Merwe emphasised that the quality of training the Academy aims to provide is high and added, “We don’t hire teachers or lecturers. We hire industry professionals with experience, and we train them to teach so our students are getting the benefit of their knowledge and experience.”

The culinary students worked hard to put out delicious food and the events management students were on hand to keep everything running smoothly.

Ruan Wepener provided the entertainment for the morning. The atmosphere was relaxed as families enjoyed what the day had to offer.
