Challenges authors face in South Africa

STRUBEN'S VALLEY – Author Charmaine Gaynor highlights the challenges writers face to be recognised as authors in South Africa.

South Africa’s publishing industry is as diverse as the various cultures within it. Authors face an array of challenges when publishing their written works. Author Charmaine Gaynor (61) can relate to the challenges of finding the proper platform to promote her books.

The Struben’s Valley resident’s passion for literature began in the early stages of her childhood. ”Since I was little girl, I have always loved books. I enjoyed reading historical novels written by authors like South African novelist Wilbur Smith,” she said.

Gaynor published her first book, Cats for Real, in September last year through a publisher based in Texas, USA. It was distributed to other countries, although her main goal is being recognised as an author in South Africa.

“Book reviews also play a vital role in how people perceive your book. Regardless of their reviews, being recognised as an author is every writer’s dream,” she said.

Like many writers, Gaynor has approached a number of media houses and book stores in an attempt to promote her books locally. She is also active on Facebook and also has a blog Chronicles of Charmaine where she can engage and update the public about her written works.

Her second book, About these Farm Cats, was published in July. It is a humorous account of farm life, catered for both a younger and older audience. She plans to publish her third book next year.
