Motorcyclist critical after accident

Special airbags used to remove rider from underneath vehicle.

A motorcyclist was critically injured after a bike and car collided along Penny Street at around 10pm last night.

Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events is still speculative and will remain a subject for police investigation and comment.

Netcare 911 paramedics, their rescue unit and the emergency services arrived at the scene and found that the biker’s lower limbs were trapped under the chassis of the vehicle. While the firemen and the Netcare rescue officer used specialised air bags to lift the vehicle off the patient, medics worked tirelessly to stabilise him at the scene.

After the patient was extricated, medics placed him on a manual ventilator and after he was deftly immobilised on a trauma board, they airlifted the critically wounded patient with the Netcare medical helicopter to a specialised facility for the care that he required.
