Maragon makes indoor hockey history

Ends festival on high note.

The Maragon Private School’s Primary U/13 Hockey girls took part in the prestigious St Andrews Hockey Festival on 31 July.

The festival format is an eight-a-side cross pool play off, where the winners of Pool A and B play the runners-up. There were 12 other primary schools at this festival competing for the coveted trophy.

The first game was played against the hosting school St Andrews Primary which ended in a 0-0 draw – a good omen for what was to follow. The other results were as follows:

Maragon beat Bedfordview 7-0, Laerskool Die Ruiter 6-0, Hurleyvale Primary 2-0 and drew against St Dominics Primary 0-0.

These results placed Maragon second in Pool A and St Andrews first.

In the semi-finals, Maragon played against Laerskool President Steyn and the result at the end of full time was 1-1. Being a semi-final, penalty flicks was the next step. This went to sudden death with Maragon eventually winning 9-8.

This placed Maragon in the finals against their hosts St Andrews. At the end of full time the result was a draw of 1-1 and the girls had to once more endure penalty flicks. They eventually won 3-1.

This trophy has been dominated by St Andrews with only Laerskool President Steyn winning it twice before.

The festival ended on a high note with the Maragon U13 Hockey Girls being the victors. Each player received a gold medal and the school’s name was engraved on the floating trophy for 2015.
