Parkies celebrates 60 years

The fun-filled day included a friendly game of rugby by teachers and past pupils.

Former Florida Park High School pupils walked down memory lane and nostalgia set as the school held its 60th anniversary celebrations last week.

The celebrations started on Thursday with a picnic for more than 1500 pupils on the sports field.

“We released school coloured balloons with a message from each class. As we released the balloons, doves flew over and It seemed like we coordinated it. It was a spiritual moment,” said the school’s principal Stella du Preez.

On Friday, a gala evening was held where past and present teachers and pupils attended including the school’s first head boy Johan van Loggenberg.

They showed off their different talents such as singing. The school’s choir also performed while the schools history was shared.

On Saturday, the big day started off with a fun walk followed by a display of more than 70 blankets that were knitted by staff.

It was then the turn of the HOG Clearwater Club members who positioned their Harley Davidson’s in the shape of a 60, to the delight of the crowd.

The teachers faced off against current pupils in a game of netball while the pupils of the past faced off against each other in a friendly game of rugby.

On Sunday the school hosted a thanksgiving prayer with former, present and next year’s prospective pupils.
