Elderly woman knocked down

Elderly woman injured when she tried to hail a taxi.

An elderly woman was knocked over on Dromedaris Street in front of a crêche this morning (Tuesday 18 August).

She and her daughter were crossing the road, on their way to hail a taxi when a mother on her way to drop her child off at Culembeeck Primary knocked her over. The daughter was hysterical on scene and had to be calmed down by Cosmo City police who attended the scene. The accident occurred at around 6.50am.

The mother stopped her vehicle and assisted the police in ascertaining details of the accident, saying she tried to swerve out of the way but could not avoid the collision.

“She walked into the road and the next minute, she was lying in the road,” crêche personnel told the Record on scene.

Patrollers from the Western Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) assisted the crêche in blocking off the road where the woman was lying. Help24 assisted and traffic was heavily delayed.

ER24 and Quick Response Service (QRS) responded to the scene where medics assessed her condition and worked quickly to get the 60-year-old on a stretcher and into the ambulance. She was rushed to Leratong Hospital for further care.

Her son who later arrived on scene said the family is from Vlakfontein and the pair had to hail a taxi to get to work.

The JMPD was called to the scene to investigate further.
