No Mandarin in our schools

Méiy?u p?t?nghuà - No to Mandarin.

Schools in the Roodepoort area have not budged to the suggestion of implementing Mandarin as an additional subject to pupils.

The Basic of Education Minister, Angie Motshekga issued a government notice on 20 March stating Mandarin will be available as a second language option to learners from grades 4 to 12.

An online article stated the decision by Motshekga stems from China being our major investment traders.

The principal of La Salle College, Jill Milde said, “Mandarin is not in demand in our community so the subject will not be taught at our school.”

The Record received a unanimous response from 10 public and private schools in the area after asking them if they will teach the Chinese subject to their students.

Other responses received from Florida Park High and Discovery Primary were, “we have never heard of this before.”

The schools in the Roodepoort area all concurs that the subject will not form part of their curriculum.
