JRA back to road resurfacing

The shortage of bitumen hampered the programme and the patching of roads.

After a nation-wide shortage of essential ingredient bitumen the Johannesburg Road Agency‘s road resurfacing programme was halted, but is now back on track.

JRA was pleased to announce some of its road works which were delayed due to the shortage was resumed on Tuesday 11 August. Bitumen, an oil-based, semi liquid substance is used in the producation of the asphalt mix for road surface construction. It was in short suplly as all refineries were undergoing routine maintenance.

The shortage is not to be confused with current road resurfacing operations in Roodepoort which is being handled by a private entity, KPG Surfacing and Civils CC, who won the tender from the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) earlier this year.

“The shortage hampered the programme and the patching of roads.

“Pothole repairs were not affected, though, as cold mix is used for this purpose,” JRA acting managing director Mpho Kau said.

He said the JRA has been improving the quality of the CoJ’s roads in the past financial year through resurfacing, rehabilitation and reconstruction programmes. Over R300 million was spent to resurface 675 kilometres of roads in seven of CoJ’s regions.

The average road length to be resurfaced in the current (2015/16) financial year is 438.6 kilometres which will cost the city around R221 million. R140 million has also been set aside for roads rehabilitation and reconstruction, according to JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers.
