Claw and Roodepoort SPCA works hand in hand

100 dogs in the community were vaccinated, dewormed and treated for ticks.

About 100 dogs were sterilised over the past three days in a campaign hosted by Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) and the Roodepoort Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) as their initiative to curb overpopulation.

Yesterday, the sterilisation programme took place at the Roodepoort SPCA wrapped up and according to manager of the SPCA, Mandy Cattanach, the campaign went smoothly.

“We have made a dent in animal overpopulation and we are so proud,” said Mandy Cattanach, manager at the Roodepoort SPCA.

Mandy said although everyone who helped out are tired, the team has done well and they hope to do this again soon.

“If we do launch the same campaign, it will depend entirely on the funds we receive from the community because providing the dogs with anaesthetic alone is very expensive,” said Mandy.

About 90 per cent of the dogs chosen by Claw who got sterilised were females and each of them received a collar, blanket and food when they were returned to their respective homes.

Not only were the dogs sterilised, they were also vaccinated, dewormed and each received tick treatment.

Cora Bailey, founder of Claw described the past three days as rewarding.

“It is amazing when two organisations merge to do good in the community and I cannot thank the team enough for the wonderful effort they put in to the programme,” she said happily.

Cora continued to express her gratitude about the event and how everyone performed to the best of their ability to ensure the dogs were taken care of.

She concluded that she is extremely proud of the Claw and Roodepoort SPCA staff.
