Retirees, beware of retirement village complexes that are marketed as pet friendly, as your ideas of pet friendly may be different from others. I bought into retirement village two years ago, on the understanding that my pets, all three of whom have been with me for ten years or more, would be accepted.

Pet friendly was one of my major criteria – my cats are my companions, and because I adopted them I feel obligated to give them a forever home.

For almost two years there was no problem, no drama, and we were quite happy. In the last few months there appears to be a person or persons who have decided that they don’t like cats in the complex and we cat owners have summarily been informed that they will have to be removed.

Now I know that the rules say that pets should not roam around on the common ground etc. but has anyone ever entered a pet friendly complex and not seen a few cats lazing in the sun on garden walls?

This is completely acceptable in any other pet friendly complex that I have been to.

If people are offended by cats entering their gardens they could be pro-active in discouraging them by spraying water

at them or using cat repellent spray or granules.

I believe that the managing agents could and should, have dealt with this issue in a kinder, more humane manner.

Rules are one thing, but we pet lovers have rights too, and would not have bought at this retirement village, had we known that we would be in this distressing situation two years later.
