Lead like Mandela: Toastmasters

Toastmaster Dick Hallett kept members entertianed with quotes and anecdotes from Madiba's life in line with the evening's theme.

Florida Toastmasters at a recent meeting in the Huguenot Restaurant, Flora Centre spoke about leading Mandela-style.

Maggie Temana toasted ‘To Madiba’ to kick off the meeting, recognising his leadership and the coexistence of various ethnic groups in South Africa, of which the club is a prime example.

The club hosted distinguished visitors including area director Lebogang Sebogodiand divisional director of district 74 Thabo Melefane. Five other guests were also welcomed and encouraged to participate in the meeting.

Distinguished Toastmaster Tim Knights taught attendees a thing or two about effective evaluation during the education session.

Listeners couldn’t get bored with the diverse topics speakers Paul Nicolai and Victor Silas covered in their speeches. Nicolai shared his findings in terms of visual acuity in children between the ages of 5 and 15, offering a solution to the problem by which the community can get involved in arranging visual screenings at schools and in the workplace.

Silas emulated a radio talk show host speaking about toastmasters, where it started and how it enlightens members, even accepting questions towards the end of his talk.

The next meeting is tonight (Tuesday 4 August) at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre, Ontdekkers Road from 7.15pm. Meetings are usually on the first Tuesday of every month. A smart-casual dresscode applies tonight. Paul Nicolai on 082 775 6623 or Dawn Hemming on 082 330 9215.
