Local resident links Claw to Ebenezer House

Claw paid the residents at the Ebenezer Home a visit and taught them how to plant vegetables.

After seeing the articles Claw’s answer to starvation and Ebenezer Home needs donations, Tania Harris from Wilro Park was triggered to link the two organisations.

About two months ago the Record published an article stating Ebenezer House needing assistance to start their own vegetable garden, and because of this Tania made an effort to help them.

“I always enjoy helping other people and I have so much respect for Ebenezer Home because despite their disabilities, they rise above it,” said Tania.

Ebenezer Home takes care of 23 psychiatrically ill patients who suffer from bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.

The day started off at Ebenezer Home with a Q&A between residents at Ebenezer Home and Community Led Animal Welfare‘s (Claw) David Khoza.

David started an organic vegetable garden at Claw which feeds over 20 people regularly and said he decided to put all nervousness aside and focus on helping the Ebenezer House residents.

He was asked what are the best vegetables to grow and what precautionary measures one has to take when preparing compost.

The interaction between David and the residents were followed by a step-by-step tutorial by David on how to plant vegetables.

After listening to instructions, the residents excitedly started to prepare the ground for planting spinach, onions and lettuce.

Graca Caseiro, a resident at Ebenezer Home said the visit from Claw was exactly what she needed.

“I knew nothing about gardening and as soon as I heard people from Claw were coming to teach us how to plant, I was really excited. I learned so much about gardening,” said Graca.

David said Claw will definitely visit Ebenezer Home regularly to monitor their garden.

“We will visit them about three times a month to help them with whatever gardening skills they require,” David told the Record.
