LITTLE FALLS – Mountain walk make residents aware of the natural features available in their area

Residents of Struben’s Valley and Little Falls converged at the Eagle View Guest House on 1 August for a mountain walk.

The 2 and 4km walks were organised by Little Falls and Struben’s Valley Residential Community (LIFCO) – a non-profit organisation that aims to get the neighbours together and encourage residents’ participation on various community initiatives.

Elaine Sutherland from LIFCO explained, “We want to enrich our neighbourhood by managing the facilities that we have available to us and by encouraging neighbours to enjoy the many natural facilities we have in the area.”

Seventy residents including children and adults were split into two groups and walked the 2km and 4km walks. The walks commenced and ended at the Eagle View Guest House.

Sutherland said their vision was to make their neighbourhood safe, secure and a sustainable area to live in.

“We would like to encourage all residents in the area to join us, there are many projects that are planned, and they need funds to go ahead. There are many vagrants that live in the surrounding bush and pavement areas, and these areas need to be trimmed and cut back on a regular basis,” said Sutherland.

She indicated that many jobs would be created with the various projects the NPO was planning to implement. The one project that had been started is Men At Work. In this project residents clean up all perimeter pavements.

“We would also like to support local businesses, erect fences for the green belt areas, install speed humps and booms for busy streets, as well as look at similar projects such as Fibre to Home and going off the grid,” she concluded.

Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) manager Reg Mazibuko said they were encouraging more members to get involved in community activities. “We need to alert our residents that our associations don’t just get involved in issues of fighting crime,” said Mazibuko.
