Ward 83 spotless after iCOP

Hard work and the cooperation of various municipal departments last Monday (27 July) resulted in a cleaner, beautiful Ward 83.

The ward, under councillor Suzanne Clarke and consisting of Roodekrans, Wilro Park, Breaunanda, Princess Crossing and Helderkruin was in dire need of a neighbourhood intervention in terms of cleaning up the side walks, illegal dumping sites, the stormwater river, pruning trees etcetera, Region C Community Engagement officer Cecile Retief told the Record.

Focus was furthermore on clearing up road markings, evicting vagrants and evicting illegal traders on the road side. The integrated community outreach programme (iCOP) kicked off at 9am on Monday and started at the intersection of Foxglove Street and Wilgerood Road. Here representatives from various departments — including Joburg City Parks & Zoo, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Pikitup, JMPD, City Power and the Department of Public Service and Administration — got busy. Clarke, the ward committee and residents were also involved.

Inspectors from the Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum) department set up tents in the parking grounds of Pick n Pay on CR Swart Avenue to help residents deal with service delivery issues.

Clarke picked up a pick herself and started getting rid of grass growing through the tar road alongside JRA workers in Silver Tree Drive. She had City Parks tend to a bluegum tree in a resident’s yard of which the stem is hollow and leaning over, threatening to fall onto her house.

“This is a sheer practicality exercise,” said ward committee member Glyn Barry about iCOP adding that “it should be an on-going occurrence from a crime point of view”.
