SPCA in crisis

Local SPCA needs help to remain going.

Rumours that the Roodepoort Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is closing its doors are unfounded.

A Facebook message doing the rounds states that after Krugersdorp SPCA closed its doors, Roodepoort will follow shortly and that people should take their pets to Booysens SPCA.

The sudden closing down of Krugersdorp’s (SPCA) three months ago, also questions the financial status of all SPCAs in the country.

According to Jolene Beyleveld, Public Relations Manager for Johannesburg SPCA , the Krugersdorp branch had to close down because they were battling financially.

“All SPCAs depend solely on donations from the community and when they do not do this, it causes financial strain,” Jolene said.

Mandy Cattanach from Roodepoort SPCA seconded that and said they would appreciate any funding from the community to help provide for the animals, such as blankets, medicine, food and money.

“We try our best to help all pets wherever we can. Since the Krugersdorp SPCA closed down, the number of pets we see daily have escalated and we never want to turn dogs away who need assistance,” said Mandy.

The community is encouraged to donate to their local SPCAs in order to curb their battle with finances and resources for the pets.
