Child Welfare: “The sky is your limit”

Roodepoort children taught to build kites from scratch in celebration of Mandela Day and as part of a new programme.

The Roodepoort branch of Child Welfare South Africa celebrated Mandela Day on Friday 17 July by teaching boys to build kites.

The theme of the day, “the sky is your limit”, perfectly complemented the day. The kitemaking activity with reeds and refuse bags also included educational information to enhance the boys’ self-image and to make them determined to reach their dreams and goals in life, office manager Estelle Odendaal said. The initiative formed part of the launch of their new Boy Child Programme.

“Vulnerable and disadvantaged boys are selected from the community for this programme that focuses on emotional development and mentorship to enable them to become strong leaders,” Odendaal said.

“They are paired up with mentors from the Roodepoort community, all from different walks of life but linked to the needs of the boys.”

Child Welfare South Africa has partnered with the police, the medical profession and other professionals in the community to launch the project.
