GALLERY and VIDEO: WODAC’s 20th anniversary draws a large crowd

MIDRAND – Families enjoy a weekend at the action-packed pet expo.

Gallagher Estate played host to the 20th World of Dogs and Cats (WODAC) Pet Expo on the weekend of 17–19 July. From the moment the doors opened, the crowds came in thick and fast. The expo seemed to appeal across the age spectrum as there was plenty to see and do.

Stalls representing a variety of breeds of animals were manned by staff who were knowledgeable, patient and happy for the public to interact with the animals. Horses were petted, dogs were patted, snakes entwined around arms and fingers, and children were able to experience being carted around the arena by miniature horses.

Also present were animal rescue and welfare societies. They were able to answer questions and provide information on the plight of rescue animals, as well as educate the crowd on a number of issues.

There were a number of classes on display for the public to enjoy. The crowd was enraptured by the different agility and obedience classes and entertained by The Singing Cowboy, who performed dressage.

The highlight of the event was Honeydew resident Beth Babbin’s Dogs of the World parade. Dogs walked around the main arena while their handlers were dressed in costumes of the dogs’ countries of origin. Interesting pieces of trivia were told as each dog made their way around the perimeter. The finale saw all the dogs come together at the end, much to the crowd’s applause and delight.

For anyone who missed the event and wish they had attended, luckily WODAC does not look to be losing momentum and will no doubt deliver again next year.
