Clearwater mall’s charity trolley race

About 50 excited faces competed in a trolley race at Clearwater mall's parking lot on Saturday morning for Mandela Day.

About 50 people participated in Clearwater mall’s annual three kilometre trolley race on Saturday morning in aid of charity and to celebrate Mandela Day.

The teams, consisting of three to four members per trolley, showed determination as their faces began to sweat from tiredness, yet they were still eager to finish the race.

The trolleys consisted of goody bags they received for participating and mere body weight of one team member.

The race took place at the underground parking lot and participants paid R500 per trolley to enter.

Many participants got creative by decorating their trolleys with sirens, cardboard, banners and other materials to show off their businesses.

The charities who benefited from this event are Matla a bana (a charity project which helps abused children) and Gateway Society School (a school for physically and mentally disabled children).

Both the charity and the school received R10 000 each.

Maragon students won by completing the race with an impressive eight minutes and twelve seconds.

“The race was an exciting experience because you get to have fun while sponsoring a charity,” said Damien Sousa De Gouveia.

The winners received R750 Clearwater vouchers per team member.

Participants who came in second place received R500 vouchers each and those who came third place each received R250 vouchers, respectively.

Prizes were also awarded for the best decorated trolley and the best team spirit.
