Criminals poison dog to get to bikes

Suspects specific about what they wanted.

Piet Combrinck is sad and angry after cruel criminals poisoned his three-month-old Rottweiler to gain access to his property.

Combrinck said a water pipe burst at his house on Tuesday night and not wanting to waste water he closed off the supply. When he woke at about 4.20 am on Wednesday morning he had to go outside to open the water supply again in order to take a shower. He suspected noticing untoward when he got outside as his dog was playful when she saw him.

He went back in and while busy inside heard his dog bark ferociously but knowing a cat sometimes comes into the yard assumed this was the case.

His dog kept barking in a corner of the yard by his caravan. Later he went to his garage in order to pull out his motorcycle. It was then he found his garage door’s lock was tampered with to such an extent he could not open it.

“I then realised my dog was quiet. I called to her and she did not come. When I went looking for her I found her dead behind the caravan foaming at the mouth,” said Combrinck.

“I suspect the suspects must still have been in the yard while I was inside and she was poisoned a short while before I was outside at the garage door.

“The fact that they tried to break open the garage door also makes me suspect they were after the motorcycles. There was a bicycle parked outside and the caravan’s door was open but yet they were not interested in that,” said Combrinck.

He also said on investigation he found hand marks in the dust on the windowsill of the garage which indicates they might have been trying to look through the window.

Combrinck asked the community of Witpoortjie to be extra vigilant as far as their dogs are concerned and to also take extra precaution with the safety of their vehicles.
