Ruimsig crechè gets special visitors

Jermina Khumalo established the crèche three years ago after seeing children playing in the streets unattended.

Mr Junior Teen South Africa Roan Gonsalves, Miss Gauteng Pre-Teen Michelle Moolman along with Africa Food for Thought volunteer Janet Fourie paid a visit to Apex Creche in Ruimsig this morning.

They did not arrive empty handed as they brought used toys, food parcels and party packets for the more than 100 children.

“This is a chance to meet new people and help those who need it the most. This also teaches us who have come from more privileged backgrounds to appreciate what we have. It is nice to bring a smile upon someone’s face,” said Roan.

Africa Food for Thought is a non-profit organization, run by volunteers focused on equipping and supplying school feeding programmes.

They are also involved in community projects, self-empowerment projects, shelters and half-way houses.

The NGO feeds nearly 16 000 children on most school days, support 14 primary schools, 14 creches and over 140 orphaned and vulnerable children mainly on the West Rand and Soweto.

“Charity work brings us closer to the community and we learn a lot from them. What we have done here today may not make a huge difference in the children’s lives but it is a start,” said Michelle.

“I started a home-based care but I would often see children playing in the streets which are dangerous because of the trucks and cars so I decided to open the crèche. Today is an important day for us because our visitors have made the children happy and I thank them from the bottom of my heart,” she said.
