Lonely crusade against alleged crooked cops

Police not acting on tip-off.

Are local cops succumbing to corrupt practices and are they in cahoots with criminals, and what is the Roodepoort Police doing about it? Local resident Stephan Myburgh wants to know.

Myburgh, who takes a keen interest in his immediate neighbourhood, has been noticing since April suspicious behaviour by two female officers. According to him it started when he saw a detective bakkie stopping at the old Roodepoort Police barracks. Myburgh alleges it is a wellknown fact a shebeen is being run from the premises and on the day the police vehicle stopped alcohol was being delivered.

“The officers did not act against those receiving the alcohol and a person handed them something through the window which I suspect might have been a bribe,” speculates Myburgh.

Myburgh got the chance to confront the two police women at a shopping mall but they shrugged it off saying the vehicle is used by different employees. A few days later he saw the same vehicle stop at a house in Seventh Avenue which according to Myburgh is known to be occupied by about 30 illegal foreign nationals and from which an illegal motor vehicle repair business is run.

“Their lights, except for the blue lights were off and two of the residents came out carryin beers and got into the car. Only when they got to Amsterdam Street did they switch their lights back on,” said Myburgh.

At this stage Myburgh reported the incidents to a senior official at Roodepoort police station who referred him to a colonel. The latter expressed his dismay of corrupt police officers in their ranks and promised to launch an investigation. Myburgh says the official never came back to him and to his knowledge no investigation has been launched. He took it even further and spoke to a third high ranking officer but without success.

More incidents involving the same two officers followed including one where they tried to hide when they saw Myburgh and where the one officer came running out of the house and threw a package into the police vehicle before it sped off without her.

“My theory is that the police women are taking bribes from the illegal immigrants as well as the shebeen,” said Myburgh.

“I am also highly concerned with Roodepoort police’s seemingly disinterest in investigating the matter,” he added. Myburgh also said this could be the tip of the iceberg considering the high volumes of drug activity in the very close proximity of where the two police women has been seen.

The information has been passed on to Roodepoort Police and the Record is awaiting comment.
