Abbreviations can change the fact that operators of the national police number 10 111 and other emergency services call centers often get the address wrong.
According to resident Louis Grobler of Security in Practise learning to spell one’s street name and address phonetically and using other useful abbreviations can be a saving grace in an emergency situation.
“The community should also ensure that their homes are clearly marked with house numbers,” Grobler in a press release said.
Use the following phonetic alphabet to spell out your name or address:

STANDBY: Reporting, I will get back to you now
MOBILE: On the way
EMS: Emergency services
ETA: Estimated time of arrival
LDV: Light duty vehicle (or bakkie)
DUI: Driving under the influence
