MTN strike continues

MTN is offering an eight per-cent guaranteed bonus, which will be payable in two instalments.

It has been more than a month since MTN workers downed tools, demanding higher wages and bonuses.

The call centre and warehouse workers, led by the Communication Workers Union embarked on the strike on 20 May.

On Friday, striking workers blocked 14th Avenue in Fairlands, restricting motorists who were forced to use alternative roads.

Last month, police and Johannesburg Metro Police Department officials had to fire rubber bullets at striking workers after they burned tyres outside the gates of the Innovation Centre.

The demands by workers include 16% for bonuses, a 10% salary increase and the conversion of non-permanent workers to permanent positions.

Last week Monday, MTN South Africa confirmed its CEO Ahmad Farroukh will resign at the end of this month, less than a year into his job.

After the CEO’s resignation was announced, CWU warned it will intensify its strike action if the MTN leadership does not resolve the negotiations which have reached a stalemate.
