Attention drawn to beautifying local parks

DA and residents unite to enjoy, celebrate and raise awareness of Bert Close Park.

In two ticks Bert Close Park was filled with residents gathering for the community day on a sunny Saturday afternoon 11 July.

The day, organised by DA Ward 85 councilor Carl Mann and concerned residents Ted Lawson and Lourens le Grange, among others, was well attended. Here, Mann and DA member of parliament Anchen Dreyer addressed residents about the park, planned maintenance there and their buy-in towards its continued beauty and enjoyment.

While enjoying sponsored boerie rolls, cold drinks and mini doughnuts the residents heard the plan to beautify the park. Mann told the Record he is in negotiations with Joburg City Parks and Joburg Water to solve identified issues in the park.

These include a leaking sewerage pipe suspended over the little river running through the park and the regular maintenance of the park.
Residents complained grass in the park is only cut once every 12-odd weeks, and Mann is negotiating with City Parks to upgrade it to ‘Developed park’-status, which means it will be maintained every four to six weeks and new features like benches and swings will be added.
Loryn Mulhearn who grew up in the area and who’s parents still live in vicinity of the park remembers how secure it was.

“I had a carefree time on this grass; there were more trees, swings and slides to play on and it was well-kept, always.”

Lawson and other concerned residents started a ‘beautify our park’-campaign and work to keep the park clean, safe and a key family time area, he said.

Mann emphasized that residents should take ownership of the park and keep reporting problems there.
“In the end, if this park is beautiful and enjoyed by all, it will only stand to benefit you and your properties surrounding it,” Mann told the crowd.
