A puzzle-maker at heart

Meet Astrid, a puzzle-maker, painter and hairstylist who uses her skills to put a smile on another’s face.

Astrid Pack’s talents knows no bounds. She expresses her creativity by making different kinds of puzzles and styles people’s hair for a living.

Her friendly warm smile is  the first thing you notice when meeting her for the first time.

“I made my first 3D puzzle for my close friend, Verdi Bosche’s grandson, who was born blind. There are not many toys available for blind children.”

“To me it is a natural thing to give,” Astrid said.

Verdi described Astrid as creative, yet practical.

“While you talk to Astrid she already forms a picture in her head, of what she will make,” said Verdi.

She creates various sculptures from wood. She simply uses her hands and scroll saw.

She started with this hobby 10 years ago when she made Christmas boxes for her loved ones. By decorating the boxes, she discovered she had a passion for creating objects from wood.

Astrid said whenever time permits, she makes puzzles. “I even do this during my breaks at work,” she said.

“If all else fails, I read the instructions,” said Astrid.

Astrid said anyone can make the puzzles. To take up the hobby will cost about R12 000 which includes the saw and other materials.

Her motto in life is “If you can see it, you can do it.”

This is printed boldly on her business cards.

She added that if anyone would like to take up the hobby, they should just go for it.

Pointing at her motto on her business card, she smiled and said, “See? Anyone can do this.”
