Captain Fantastic Byron

Byron is also an assistant teacher at Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge.

It was fresh beginnings for Roodepoort Rugby Club’s first team this year after a number of their top players had moved on last year.

This meant the club had to undergo a transformation as they looked to recruit more talent.

Byron Godfrey, who has been with the club for four years was given the captain’s armband.

The 27-year-old utility back started playing rugby when he was 10 years old.

With his father, a former Poorte player as his inspiration, Byron rose through the team ranks and his leadership qualities made him a pillar in the team.

“I was born and raised in Roodepoort. There is no other team I would want to play for. I have a lot of pride and respect for the team and the players who came before us,” he said.

His first game for the club was in the second team as a substitute against the Union Bulldogs from Turffontein.

Byron dreams of winning the league just as his predecessors did in 2013.

“Right now we are training hard and we play for each other. Our biggest aspirations are to reclaim the glory of Poorte and win the league once again,” he said.
