SPCA wants to relieve animals of kennel stress

Nobody wants to adopt a stressed dog, but this measure should help keep the dogs healthy and happy.

The Roodepoort SPCA hopes to relieve rescued dogs’ kennel stress by building camps in which they can exercise and play daily.

The organization appealed for donations towards such camps on facebook this morning (Wednesday 1 July) as kennel stress have become a serious concern to them.

Roodepoort branch manager Mandy Cattanach told the Record two such camps or ‘runs’ have already been build but ideally another four should be built to cater for all the dogs. She estimated one such project to cost between R2 000 and R3 000.

Kennel stress is explained as a dog having been cooped up in a kennel for too long showing signs of stress, running up and down the kennel, barking and jumping continuously etcetera.

Donations can either be monetary or be material with which to build the camps.

In order to build camps they need:

• Fencing of up to three meters high

• Weld mesh of up to two meters high

• Stabilising wire (‘blue wire’)

• Gates of at least two meters high

• Cement

• Grass to plant in the runs
