Ace your tax submission with these handy tips

Tax season starts today.

Tax Season starts today and and the South African Revenue Service (Sars) has supplied the following handy tips to make your submission easier.

• Register for eFiling at www.sarsefiling.co.za.

It takes just minutes to sign up and you will be able to complete your pre-populated tax return, check the outcome with the tax calculator and submit your return. You will receive the outcome within moments of submitting.

Once you have registered for eFiling, you can download the free and easy to use SARS eFiling App. Simply visit the App Store for iPhone 4s and up and iPad 2 and up or the Google Play Store for Android devices.

• With the SARS Help-You-eFile service you get instant access to the contact centre staff while you are eFiling your return. Simply click the Help-You-eFile icon displayed on the login page and follow the prompts.

• Visit a branch where staff will help you to submit your return. Make sure you bring with you all documents relating to income you received during the year and deductions you want to claim, such as your:

• IRP5/IT3(a) certificates, which you will receive from your employer/s or pension fund

• Medical aid certificates and receipts

• Retirement annuity certificates

• Travel logbook (if you receive a travel allowance or use a company car)

• Tax certificates that you received in respect of investment income (IT3(b))

• Your original ID, passport or driver’s licence

If you have changed your banking details in the past year and have not informed SARS please also bring:

• Certified copies of either your ID, passport or driver’s licence

• Bank statement with original bank stamp not more than three months old

• Proof of residential address (e.g. municipal account)

If you provide your cellphone number and email address Sars will send you your assessment result instantly and securely via SMS or email.

• Do not miss the deadline and get a fine. Make sure you submit your return before the following dates:

• Paper/manual via post or dropping it off in a SARS drop box – 30 September 2015.

• Electronically at a SARS branch – 27 November 2015.

• Non-provisional taxpayers who use eFiling – 27 November 2015.

• Provisional taxpayers who use eFiling – 29 January 2016.
