What to do when you’re a hijacking target

Don't be a hero; a life is worth more than a vehicle.

A spike in hijackings and carjackings in the Florida area have lead a resident to share tips that he believes will help the community prevent or deal with such situations.

Louis Grobler, that works for Security in Practise, hopes the following tips will help Roodepoort and Florida people:

Be on the lookout for people standing near your gate or driveway and ensure that the area around your gate or driveway is well-lit at all times, Grobler said.

Phone ahead to give a relative or friend your expected time of arrival.

Kowing your neighbours and what vehicles they drive goes a long way to identify uncommon vehicles in your area. Adopting a search pattern radius to scout before approaching your house is also a good idea.

Look out for vehicles that may have been following you or is trying to box you in while driving. Always have a planned escape route and keep this route open.

Adjust your speed when approaching a traffic light so that you do not have to come to a complete stop where possible.

“Use your vehicle’s horn to draw attention to yourself if you’re approached,” Grobler said.

Keep your vehicle keys in your hand as opposed to a handbag or pocket when you approach your vehicle, else you’re seen as off-guard. Stay alert while loading or off-loading grocery bags. Continuously change the route that you drive. Look out for any suspicious objects near your vehicle before you get in.

When parking, consider reverse parking (even at home) as this gives you a quicker exit.

“If you are held up, remember to remain calm, don’t argue with the suspects and don’t make sudden gestures.

“Avoid eye contact but try to remember what the carjacker looked like by identifying and remembering special features; also remember to comply with the carjacker’s directions (within reason) and try to get away from the area as quickly as possible,” he said.
