K9 founder talks “dogs”

"People need to be more responsible when feeding dogs," said, Ruan Nel, founder of the K9 Community.

Helping people better understand their dogs is something Ruan Nel is passionate about, which is the reason why he started the K-9 Community.

The K-9 Community is an organisation for dog lovers which teaches people, through their web site, diverse topics like why your dog tilt its head, to why your dog is afraid of swimming.

Ruan spoke to the Record about what people should expect when adopting a dog for the first time as well as the necessary diet your ‘canine’ may need.

“If you are looking to adopt a dog, you should look at your lifestyle first. If you want an active dog, it would be a good idea to be active yourself,” he said.

He mentioned that when you adopt a puppy or a fully-grown dog, you need to understand it could take time for your dog to be familiar with you. “I had an incident when I adopted my dog and he showed withdrawal signs towards a friend of mine who is tall and has black hair. This is because he was physically abused by someone of the same stature.”

You should also make sure your dog follows a healthy-eating plan. “I highly recommend you buy your dog’s food from a vet, alternatively, get a trusted brand from a store and feed your dog about the same time every day. Getting your dog in that routine is good for them.”

Then Ruan made a comment with sincerity in his voice.

“If you do not eat ‘scraps’ then do not give your dog ‘scraps.'”

A dog should be treated fairly like any other human-being.

“Puppies and grown-dogs need a specific amount of nutrients. Always use the back of the packet of food as a guide to feed your dogs.”
