Local salon reaches out to community

HONEYDEW – Students and pensioners alike are invited to a pensioner's day on 22 July.

A local hair salon based in The Ridge Shopping Centre in Honeydew is reaching out to the community and they’re grabbing each side of the age spectrum. Owner Amanda Buys wanted to do “something special” for her older clients. “I have a few clients who are pensioners and I want to start a pensioner’s day once a week for them.”
On 22 July the salon is hosting a community day on the premises. Her strategy is simple – she’s telling her clients about the day and inviting them to bring any friends they think might enjoy it. “We’re a local centre. We’re not big. All our clients are from the surrounding homes and complexes. We’re not managing transport on the day, but if someone is stuck we’ll do what we can to help out.” Nick Savides, the new owner of the Spar, has offered to donate the snacks and salon sponsor Schwartzkopf is providing goodie bags for the pensioners.

But it doesn’t stop there. Industries evolve over time and hairdressing is no different. Students who might be interested in it as a career don’t always know what it entails. She is opening her doors to students (aged 16 years and above) to come along and get their hands ‘dirty’ on the day. “Hairdressing is not glamourous – it’s hard work!” She wants to show youngsters what they can expect when they start out. She’ll also be on the lookout for the top two performers on the day for any future positions that may become available during busy periods.

The day will run from 9am – 12pm on Wednesday, 22 July and all are welcome. Should any students be interested in participating on the day, they can call Amanda to book their spot.
