BREAKING NEWS: Another policeman shot dead

While being off duty and allegedly while washing his vehicle, the policeman was confronted by robbers.

A police officer succumbed to his injuries and a suspect was shot during an attempted robbery and an ensuing chase in Mitchell Street and Honeyball Avenue this afternoon (Monday 22 June).

The policeman, believed to be in his 40s and apparently in civilian clothing, washing his vehicle, was allegedly confronted by four suspects in his yard, eyewitnesses said.

According to a witnesses the police officer, after being shot, gave chase. He chased perpetrators up Honeyball Avenue towards Golf Club Terrace and shot one of the suspects in the forearm. The policeman allegedly succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the nearby Discovery Clinic, but this has not yet been confirmed.

The injured suspect’s shirt and his firearm was recovered at the gate of one of the houses on Honeyball Avenue.

After Florida CPF, ER 24 and various security companies arrived on scene, medics assessed the injured suspect and transported him to Leratong Hospital under police guard.

Two other suspects were caught and arrested on scene by Florida Police. The fourth suspect got away during the earlier chase, allegedly in a taxi used as a getaway vehicle.

On scene Florida Police spokesperson Lydia Dikolomelo could not yet confirm all of the details but committed to send a press statement to the Record at a later stage.

Honeydew Cluster commander Wayne Sirkhot was also on scene. Dikolomela could not divulge the identity of the officer as his next of kin had not yet been informed of his death.

Florida CPF’s Caleb Finn declined to comment until facts have been verified.
