UPDATE: Brown’s Jewellery store robbery

STRUBEN'S VALLEY–UPDATE: Brown's Jewellery store set off smoke bombs during robbery.

Brown’s Jewellery store at Clearwater Mall was held up by four armed men on 18 June at 5.40pm.

According to SAPS Provincial spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu, “Four male suspects were involved in an armed robbery. Three suspects entered the store on the pretence of purchasing something.” Clearwater General Manager Vicky Denyschen said, “One of the suspects stayed outside as a lookout while the three men escorted the Browns security guard inside.”

Clearwater security was alerted to the incident and immediately rushed to the store. According to Denyschen, on the time of their arrival, the smoke bomb (a security deterrent) had been set off. “The guards heard a loud bang, so they ducked but on inspection there has been no evidence of any bullet damage or casings,” added Denyschen.

Maj Mngomezulu confirmed that “no shots were fired at the scene.”

Reports suggest that the four suspects fled in a Quantum bakkie out of Entrance 2 where their getaway car was parked on the road outside. Honeydew CPF media relations person Jon Rosenberg said, “We and the police chased after the suspects and caught five suspected suspects. None of these suspects had any items or firearms on their person. The police had to let them go.” Maj Mngomezulu stated, “A case of business robbery with a firearm has been opened.”

Clearwater had another robbery at their Scoin shop on 22 May. Denyschen explained the safety measures that are in place at Clearwater Mall. “We have lots of men on the floor that are well trained. Often, if they see something or someone suspicious, they will make them feel very uncomfortable by asking them questions. They even go as far as following them to their cars. The mall also has spotters at each entrance.” She further added, “It is often difficult to differentiate between customers and criminals.” The mall also has an armed response service and work together with the SAPS to ensure the centre’s safety.
