A truck and taxi collided yesterday afternoon leaving one man dead and 13 others injured at the Main Reef and Robert Road intersection in Robertville.

The Florida Community Policing Forum arrived on the scene and came across the horrific accident and called for medical assistance.

Private ambulances such as ER24, Netcare 911 and provincial services swiftly arrived on scene and found the two vehicles in the middle of the intersection.

The medium-duty truck lay on its side while the taxi was partially pinned underneath it.

Paramedics assessed the scene and discovered three passengers who sat in the front of the taxi lay trapped and were in a critical condition.

Rescue services had to use the Jaws-Of-Life equipment to free the patients in a 30- minute operation.

Upon extrication, paramedics provided the three critically injured patients with advanced life support to stabilize their vital signs. Unfortunately one of the critically injured patients, a male, succumbed to multiple injuries.

The Netcare1 helicopter was activated to airlift a critically injured man to hospital for urgent medical care, while another critically injured woman was treated at the scene and rushed to hospital.

Nine other commuters sustained minor to moderate injuries. One of the commuters was a two-year-old girl who sustained minor injuries.

Paramedics treated the nine patients for their injuries and transported them to various hospitals for further medical treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
